(latest revision 06/09/2015)

Hi All,

September will be quite a busy archery month for ASKA. The planned events are:

1)  End of Outdoor Shooting Season - Move to indoor shooting at Kilwinning Academy on Wednesday September 9th.

Notes - there is no training equipment at Kilwinning.

it may take a bit more time to set up the equipment on the 9th.

2) The Eglinton Clout will take place at Eglinton Park on Sunday 13th September. Assembly is 09:00 hours so we can set up the field. The Rangers will supply the fencing, but we need to erect it.

3) The closing shoot will take place at McGavin Park on Sunday 20th September. Assembly is at 10:00 hours.

Notes - medals will be given for performance.

The Scollon Trophy and awards will be competed for by Juniors (scratch scores)

The best 'improvers' (from the Archers who participated in the opening Shoot) will be awarded Trophies.

Older News

Dear Members,
Just a quick note about activities in December.
Christmas Fun Shoot:
This year's Christmas Fun shoot will be held on Thursday (18th), at Greenwood Academy.
Ceremony commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the laying of the Kilwinning Abbey Tower foundation stone:
The ceremony will be held at the Abbey Tower, on Sunday December 21st. It starts at 11:30, and should last about 40 minutes (refer to my previous mail that gives more detail). We will assemble at the Abbey Tower at 11:00. Those attending should wear ASKA uniform. If you don't have a uniform, then please wear a white top. We've a couple of bunnets we can lend on a first come (first fit!!) basis. As the original ceremony predates recurve and compound bows, members should only carry longbows. We've a few longbows we can lend out. If you bring your own quiver, we'll supply some wooden arrows.
It seems that this is to be quite an important event, with some local dignitaries attending (including the Earl of Eglinton). It would be great to see a strong representation of the Society. What I mean is; please come along if you can!
URTV has asked permission to “come along and document the event. This would involve 2 cameras filming the event and doing quick interviews with guests from the Heritage society, Masons and Archers along with local dignitaries before and after the event as time allows. The finished video would be uploaded to Inverclyde TV and from there can be shared across the networks channels including Ayr TV and Helensburgh TV.”
Sports Hall Closure Dates:
Here's a reminder that there will be NO archery sessions on the following dates:
Kilwinning Academy:
- 24th December 2014
- 31st December 2014
- 14th January 2015
- 21st January 2015
- 28th January 2015
- 4th February 2015
Greenwood Academy:
- 25th December 2014
- 1st January 2015

I wish you all a Merry Christmas

Ayrshire League 2014-15

Dear members,
ASKA hosted the second leg of this year's Ayrshire League, at Greenwood Academy, on Sunday 16th November. Nine ASKA members competed against some very stiff opposition.  One team had two archers scoring more than 570, and ASKA didn't quite make it into the "Team" medals.
However, excellent performances were put in by Ben Nelson (Junior Gold Medal), Lewis Scott (Junior Silver Medal) and David Gillon (Novice Silver Medal).
Many thanks to everyone who participated, and helped out, on the day.
The Team scores were:
1)   Clyde Arrows  2253
2)   Ayr                    2183
3)  Inverclyde        2130
4)  ASKA                 2076
5)  Irvine Tox.        1941
6)  Largs                   438
The next leg will be held at Linwood on December 14th.

Third leg of the Ayrshire League:
The ASKA Team took third place at Linwood. Andrew Gilmour and Francis Arcaro also won Novice medals.  There were only a very few points between second (Ayr) and third places. Overall winners were Clyde Arrows.

Forthcoming Events 2014

Dear Members,
The Society's final two outdoor events, in this year's shooting calendar, take place this month:
Eglinton Clout:
The Clout shoot took place at Eglinton Park, on Sunday 7th September, with distances appropriate to those attending; to a maximum of 160 yards.
Closing Shoot:
The Closing shoot will take place at McGavin Park, and has been scheduled for Sunday 14th September. If the weather forecast is really bad, it may be postponed to the following Sunday.  The main round will be a National (60/50 yards), but other distances will be included, in accordance with those attending. This is a handicap shoot, so everyone (particularly novice archers) has a fair chance of winning an award.
Assembly for the above shoots will be at 10am, with shooting starting as soon as possible. Those attending will be expected to help set up the field.
As always, I'd like to encourage members to attend these events, as it's you who make them a success.
Kilwinning Academy:
The Outdoor Season is almost over, and the indoor sessions at Kilwinning Academy start on Wednesday 10th September. (19:00-22:00hrs).
Note - The Ayrshire League will be starting soon, and I'll send out more information, as I get it.
Trip to Border Archery:
Ninteen members went on the trip to Border Archery, on Friday 29th August. They were given a very interesting tour of the workshop and shown many of Border's design and manufacturing techniques. Border's unique limb design, was also demonstrated.
After the tour, most of those present, had a go at Field Shooting, in Borders excellent (and challenging) field course. I think most would agree that this was the highlight of the trip.

I'd like to pass on special thanks to Graham Boyd, who arranged, and drove, the minibus, and to Andrew Gilmore who transported our 'gear', in his 'pickup'.

ASKA Council Meeting:
A Council meeting was held on Tuesday 5th August, and Members can obtain a copy of the Minutes by contacting the Secretary .
If you have any comments or need more information, then please don't hesitate to contact me, or another member of the Council.

ASKA Secretary
